Apostilles before moving: prepare the right documents
Build your document folder without unnecessary translations or return trips.
Start with the receiving authority
Make separate lists for your visa, family, work and school. For each document, record the receiving institution’s requirements: original or copy, language and how recently it must have been issued. One generic moving checklist cannot replace four distinct procedures.
What an apostille does
HCCH explains that an apostille replaces traditional legalisation of public documents under the applicable convention; the competent authority in the place of origin issues it. Check treaty applicability between the countries and the official authority directory. Do not send an original to an intermediary merely promising “international certification”.
Sequence saves money
Before buying a translation, ask whether the apostille itself must be translated, who must certify the translation and whether electronic documents are accepted. Keep scans of every side, receipts and the institution’s answer. Keep irreplaceable originals in hand luggage and protected digital copies separately, rather than putting everything in checked baggage.
Keep this checklist
- Record document, recipient, format and deadline for every procedure.
- Order translations after confirming requirements.
