Portugal’s NIF: prepare before paying an intermediary
Tax number, appointments and representation without confusing them with residence.
What the number is for
Finanças describes the NIF as a tax identifier also used in everyday contracts and banking. The number itself does not establish permission to live or work in Portugal. Treat obtaining a NIF, opening an account and immigration status as three separate processes.
Use the official route first
Finanças lists an appointment option for NIF requests or address changes for people without a Cartão de Cidadão. Prepare identification and check the current list for your circumstances. If using a representative, establish the power-of-attorney requirements first; sending a passport scan does not create authorisation.
