Spain: keep a travel calendar before your first tax return
183 days is not the only test. Build a useful file for your tax adviser.
Do not rely on one number
AEAT identifies more than 183 days in the calendar year, but also the centre of economic interests and a rebuttable family presumption. “I spent less than half a year there” therefore does not settle the analysis. This article does not automatically determine your residence.
Collect facts rather than guesses
Keep arrival and departure dates with tickets and accommodation records. Separately note where your spouse and children live, where activities take place and income origins. Do not post sensitive details in a public chat; prepare a private file for your chosen adviser.
Ask three questions before moving
Which countries could treat me as resident? Which treaty and documents apply to my circumstances? What obligations attach to each income type? Answers should reflect your activities and family facts, not a promotional country-card rate. Record the conclusion in writing and when it should be reviewed.
Keep this checklist
- Travel calendar and separate list of income sources.
- A written assessment of your circumstances, not a generic rate.
