Moving within the US: USCIS and mail forwarding are separate

Keep immigration correspondence from disappearing after a move.

Two separate address tasks

USCIS states that covered noncitizens must report an address change within 10 days. USPS forwarding does not update USCIS. Check the applicable method for your case on the official page; changing a bank address is not government notification.

Create a household case list

Each family member may have separate applications and receipt numbers. Before submitting, check names, the apartment number and the cases belonging to that person. Save the confirmation, submission date and a copy of the details. Do not assume one account action covered everyone.

Handle other notifications separately

Add your employer, school, insurer and bank to a personal checklist. Driver-document rules come from the relevant state authority; do not apply the USCIS deadline to them. Watch correspondence closely during the first weeks and do not publish case numbers when asking communities for help.

Keep this checklist

  • USCIS and USPS handled separately, confirmations retained.
  • Every family member and case reviewed.
