Flying with a dog: why an online certificate is not enough
Separate pet travel from trained assistance-dog rules and prepare by route.
Status is not a purchase
Under US DOT rules, a service dog is trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability. An emotional-support animal is not a service dog under these rules. Buying a vest or online certificate does not change a pet’s status. For an ordinary dog, use the carrier’s pet-travel options.
One itinerary, several checks
DOT permits specified health, behaviour and training forms, with an additional form possible for flights of eight hours or more. Animal-import rules apply separately. One airline’s approval should not be treated as approval for every sector: list the operating carriers and connections.
Keep a written travel file
In correspondence, include the route, dates and the dog’s size and weight with any required carrier. Request a booking confirmation, flight-change conditions and the airport assistance contact. Keep replies beside veterinary paperwork, recording exactly what each carrier confirmed.
Keep this checklist
- Confirmation from each operating carrier, not just the ticket seller.
- Animal entry checked separately from cabin acceptance.
