Everyday life: national rules

NHIS: workplace versus regional insurance

Foreign employees at covered workplaces generally enrol through their employer. Eligible residents without workplace coverage are normally subject to regional insurance after six months. Confirm the start date and dependent eligibility with NHIS; private insurance does not automatically grant exemption.

Six elementary and three middle-school years

Normal first-grade entry begins in March of the year after a child turns six. Foreign children can access public schools via their district school or education authority. The nine-year obligation for Korean nationals is distinct from foreign-pupil admission rules.

Licence exchange through KoROAD

For conversion to a Korean licence, KoROAD checks document authenticity and medical fitness. Written-test requirements depend on the issuing country and exemptions. This is separate from temporary driving with an international permit.

Housing: questions before signing

There is a cool season here; heating provision varies by home.

  • How is the bedroom heated, and can you control the temperature overnight?
  • What did electricity and heating cost in winter? Request actual bills.
  • Are there drafts, wet walls or a musty smell? Request video of corners and cupboards.
  • When was the boiler or heat pump last serviced, if installed?

Housing and setup costs

Jeonse and wolse differ beyond monthly rent

A large deposit is neither an ordinary monthly expense nor a guaranteed safe asset.

  • Jeonse uses a substantial deposit; wolse combines a deposit with monthly rent. Separate the deposit as upfront capital and verify return conditions.
  • Before paying, verify ownership, registered encumbrances and available deposit protection. Ask separately about heating controls, utility bills and building charges.
