Ordinary permanent residence
Ordinary permanent residence is not limited to MERCOSUR nationals. The MERCOSUR route depends on nationality, not residence in another member country.
Sufficient means required; no universal USD amount asserted
Documents for this route
- Passport, photo, birth/marriage records, local health and vaccination documents.
- Adults: police certificates from origin and countries lived in for at least 6 months in the previous 5 years.
- Use appropriate income documents; foreign work may require local notarial evidence.
- Child residence consent differs from travel permission; school records are separate.
What to do before departure
Order police certificates from the required countries. Check whether validity is measured from issue, entry or filing. Prepare birth, marriage and name-change records; check apostille or consular legalization, treaty exemptions and translation requirements. An apostille and a translation are different procedures.
Leave a tailored power of attorney with a trusted person: specify banks, property, document collection and representation. Confirm each institution will accept it, any substitution authority and expiry. Do not hand over banking passwords.
Full pre-departure checklistPartner, children & pets
Adults need national police certificates for countries lived in ≥6 months over 5 years. Means and local health documents are needed. Children need birth evidence and permission to reside, not merely travel.
Check each family member's residence, work and study rights separately. Children may need custody documents, the other parent's consent specifically to residence, school records and vaccination history. Pet preparation depends on departure, transit, airline and destination veterinary rules.
