Gyumri

View on Google Maps

Armenia’s second-largest city has a historic centre, 19th-century architecture and craft workshops. A railway connects it to Yerevan. Specialist medical care may require a trip to the capital.

Everyday life: national rules

Healthcare: Yerevan and the regions

Medical facilities are more limited outside Yerevan, and private treatment can be expensive. Arrange treatment and medical-evacuation cover. Residence status alone does not guarantee free care for every foreigner.

Enrolling a child in school

Foreign parents may apply for first-grade enrolment. The child must turn six by 31 December of the enrolment year. Applications are free; child details and a public-services number are required. Email sign-in is available without YesEm. This does not guarantee a place at any school or Russian-language teaching.

Exchanging a foreign driving licence

The government portal describes exchange of Vienna Convention-compliant licences: identity document, original licence and evidence of lawful stay. Verification with the issuing country usually takes 2–4 months. For a foreign national the exchanged licence loses validity; dual-citizenship rules differ. The mandatory exchange deadline for residents requires separate clarification.

Housing: questions before signing

There is a cool season here; heating provision varies by home.

  • How is the bedroom heated, and can you control the temperature overnight?
  • What did electricity and heating cost in winter? Request actual bills.
  • Are there drafts, wet walls or a musty smell? Request video of corners and cupboards.
  • When was the boiler or heat pump last serviced, if installed?

Renting: owner, contract and utilities

Before transferring money, verify the right to let the property and record the terms in writing.

  • The owner or an authorized person may let the property. Match ownership documentation to the address; ask a representative for evidence of authority.
  • The Civil Code provides for written form, notarization and registration of lease rights, with a notarial-form exception for standard contracts through the cadastre. Choose an appropriate registration process, not just a signed sheet.
  • Record payment currency and dates, deposit and refund terms, inventory, heating, electricity, internet and existing utility debts. No universal mandatory deposit amount is stated here.
