Everyday life: national rules

Medicare depends on eligibility

A permanent resident living in Australia can enrol in Medicare with a passport and permanent-visa evidence. A temporary visa does not establish automatic access; arrange separate insurance until eligibility and coverage are confirmed. Medicare does not make every service free.

Schooling: state and visa subclass

In NSW, temporary-resident children enrol through the Temporary Residents Program; fees and exemptions depend on visa subclass. An Authority to Enrol may be required before attendance. Melbourne follows Victorian rules: do not transfer NSW fees or exemptions to another state.

Licences: NSW and Victoria differ

NSW requires permanent residents to obtain a local licence within three months; temporary residents follow the six-month continuous-residence rule. Victoria requires conversion when living there for more than six months. A car category does not automatically permit motorcycles; tests and translations depend on the licence and state.

Housing and setup costs

Rent: weekly prices, bond and heating

Sydney and Melbourne follow different state rules; separate upfront payments.

  • Convert a weekly listing to a monthly amount using ×52÷12, not ×4. In NSW the bond is capped at four weeks of rent. Treat it as refundable upfront capital, not a recurring monthly expense.
  • Victoria has rental minimum standards covering main-living-area heating, ventilation and building-related mould. This does not mean every bedroom is heated. New energy-efficiency standards begin in phases from 1 March 2027, not all in 2026.
  • A family budget also needs electricity, gas where applicable, internet, parking and pet arrangements. Calculator scenario allowances are editable, not observed market rents or utility tariffs.
