Practical answers before moving

Australia: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Sydney: 7,505 USD/month: housing 2,898 USD, groceries 1,170 USD, utilities 260 USD, education 1,200 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Melbourne: 6,676 USD/month: housing 2,346 USD, groceries 1,092 USD, utilities 286 USD, education 1,100 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

Sydney and Melbourne follow different state rules; separate upfront payments.

  • Sydney: Harbour, ocean beaches and a large employment centre. Beachside housing and proximity to work can mean different journeys: compare train, metro, bus and ferry routes. Temporary-resident school fees follow NSW rules, not one national rule.
  • Melbourne: A Yarra River city by Port Phillip Bay, with trams, universities and cultural life. Families should budget for winter heating and consider school zones. Victorian rental and licence-conversion rules differ from NSW.

What should families with children consider in this country?

In NSW, temporary-resident children enrol through the Temporary Residents Program; fees and exemptions depend on visa subclass. An Authority to Enrol may be required before attendance. Melbourne follows Victorian rules: do not transfer NSW fees or exemptions to another state.
