Warning in English

Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). FCDO advises against all travel to Belarus FCDO advises against all travel to Belarus. You face a significant risk of arrest if you have at any time engaged in any activity now considered illegal by the Belarusian regime. There is also a low risk that direct conflict linked to the war in Ukraine may spread to Belarus. Find out more about why FCDO advises against all travel. Limited UK government support In the unlikely event that conflict starts, FCDO’s ability to support British nationals will be severely limited. Dual nationals Belarus does not recognise dual nationality. If you have both Belarusian and British passports, the authorities will consider you Belarusian, even if you enter the country on your British passport. Dual British-Belarusian nationality will not reduce your risk of arrest, questioning, or detention if you have engaged in any political activity related to Belarus. This limits the UK government’s ability to help you. See Safety and security.

Practical answers before moving

Belarus: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Minsk: 3,132 USD/month: housing 759 USD, groceries 624 USD, utilities 143 USD, education 500 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Brest: 2,542 USD/month: housing 483 USD, groceries 546 USD, utilities 137 USD, education 350 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

Future address documents form part of permanent-residence processing.

  • Minsk: Compare the journey from the apartment to the metro, school and work. The photo shows the Drazdy Reservoir area, not every residential district in the capital.
  • Brest: Being near Poland does not guarantee easy travel: check the crossing and eligibility of your passport and vehicle. Request winter bills and address-registration arrangements for the apartment.

What should families with children consider in this country?

From 20 January 2026, a Russian child under 14 cannot depart Russia for Belarus using only a birth certificate. Prepare the child’s international passport for a new family journey.
