Warning in English

Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Areas where FCDO advises against travel Transnistria FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria. There is widespread military activity in Ukraine, including close to some Moldovan borders. Transnistria is outside the control of the Moldovan government. FCDO’s ability to offer support is extremely limited and will be more limited if there is military action on or near the Moldova-Ukraine border. Energy shortages The Government of Moldova announced an energy state of emergency on 16 December 2024 linked to the cut off of gas supplies on 1 January 2025. Managed power blackouts may occur. Please follow updates from local authorities and energy companies for information.

Practical answers before moving

Moldova: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Chișinău: 3,218 USD/month: housing 759 USD, groceries 650 USD, utilities 195 USD, education 500 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Bălți: 2,516 USD/month: housing 414 USD, groceries 546 USD, utilities 182 USD, education 350 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

IGM accepts a property-register extract or a legally registered lease.

  • Chișinău: Compare the centre, Botanica and Rîșcani by school journey and the building’s heating. The photo shows the Nativity Cathedral in central Chișinău.
  • Bălți: For life in the north, identify a local school and doctor and how often you need the capital. Check winter bills and backup connectivity; Chișinău costs cannot simply be applied to Bălți.

What should families with children consider in this country?

IGM says the reunification approval application is submitted in person at its one-stop counter by a Moldovan citizen or temporary/permanent residence holder. An invitation and reunification approval are separate procedures requiring separate appointments.
