Everyday life: national rules

Medicines and clinic access

Public facilities have limited capacity; private clinics are available. Ambulance: 150. Some familiar medicines can be difficult to obtain: a pharmacy may refer you to a Moroccan doctor for an alternative prescription. Families managing food allergies should note that venues do not consistently provide allergen information.

Public schooling for foreign children

UNHCR Morocco states that public schools are accessible regardless of nationality or immigration status; primary and secondary enrolment is handled directly by schools. Public tuition is free, but allow separately for supplies, food and transport. Financial support described by UNHCR belongs to its refugee programme, not to every foreign household.

Vehicle insurance and night driving

The vehicle needs insurance evidenced by a green card. Mountain and secondary roads are particularly difficult in poor weather; weak lighting and animals add night-driving hazards. After a collision, parties complete a constat amiable form, available from insurers. Check recognition of the specific foreign licence by issuing country, separately from rental requirements.

There is a cool season here; heating provision varies by home.

  • How is the bedroom heated, and can you control the temperature overnight?
  • What did electricity and heating cost in winter? Request actual bills.
  • Are there drafts, wet walls or a musty smell? Request video of corners and cupboards.
  • When was the boiler or heat pump last serviced, if installed?

Housing and setup costs

Written lease and security deposit

Ordinary residential leases exceeding 30 days require a written agreement and a condition report.

  • Under Law 67-12, the deposit cannot exceed two months’ rent. Documented debts and damage may be deducted; leases governed by special provisions have exceptions.
  • The government portal labels the French translation unofficial. A legal dispute requires checking the original statutory text.
