Practical answers before moving

Paraguay: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Asuncion: 3,117 USD/month: housing 759 USD, groceries 624 USD, utilities 143 USD, education 450 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Encarnacion: 2,712 USD/month: housing 580 USD, groceries 572 USD, utilities 130 USD, education 350 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

Record the property’s condition in writing at handover.

  • Asuncion: The capital has the Costanera waterfront and central government services. The Paraguay River around the city is unsuitable for swimming: a river view does not mean beach living.
  • Encarnacion: A Paraná River city with managed beaches at San José, Mbói Ka’e and San Isidro. This is a river, not the sea; swimming access depends on current water conditions.

What should families with children consider in this country?

Minor citizens and foreign residents travelling with one parent, unaccompanied or with another adult need a travel authorisation or judicial permission. The usual authorisation is processed through the local Juzgado de Paz, certified and legalised; bring the original and a border copy. Evidence of parentage is also required. Non-resident visiting children have a different checklist.
