Work & taxes

Income source matters for foreigners: services physically performed in the Philippines do not become foreign-source merely because the payer is overseas.

Start with the essentials

Work permission comes before the contract

Employer-sponsored 9(g): 1–3 years based on the contract, DOLE/AEP permission and immigration processing. An announced nomad visa is not treated as open without a verified application process.

9(g) — employer-sponsored employment. One, two or three years based on contract and BI decision

Check permitted activity

Foreign-company employees, freelancers, local employees and owner-directors are different legal scenarios. Company registration does not automatically authorize personally working for that company.

When tax obligations arise

Tax residence

There is no universal “183 days = resident” rule. For a non-resident alien, over 180 days relates to engaging in business, not automatic resident classification.

Rates & limitations

Philippine-source income generally matters for aliens. Services physically performed in the country require analysis even with an overseas client. The rate depends on tax classification; foreign payment does not settle source.

Tax authority source

Rates are marginal: they apply to the relevant slice of taxable income, not all earnings. A foreign client, crypto payment or offshore account does not automatically make income tax-free. Social contributions, VAT, deductions and treaties need separate analysis.

What to bring to a bank

  • Passport and immigration-status evidence; local identification number if required.
  • Address evidence: lease, registration or utility bill as specified by the chosen bank.
  • Tax IDs and tax-residence countries; CRS/FATCA self-certification when requested.
  • Regular income evidence: employment contract and recent payslips, or freelance agreements, invoices and statements.
  • Origin of savings: statement trail, property sale or inheritance records. For crypto, keep purchase, trade and withdrawal history—not just a wallet balance.

Income source matters for foreigners: services physically performed in the Philippines do not become foreign-source merely because the payer is overseas. This is a preparation pack, not an account-opening guarantee.

Work, business & investment

Before buying a business, separately verify debt, licenses, staff, lease, accounts and your residence basis. A purchase agreement does not replace immigration approval. When networking, check the legal entity and counterpart's track record before transferring funds.

Country-specific practical tips

🇵🇭 Track an application using the receipt number

The Bureau of Immigration publishes decision lists. Search the application number on the official receipt, not just your surname. A matching entry does not replace document collection or BI implementation instructions.
