National rules

A tourist e-visa can cover up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. It is not residence or work permission. A longer-term plan needs an eligible work, investment or family basis.

Everyday transport

The official guide lists buses, taxis and ride-hailing. Hoan Kiem Lake is popular for morning and evening walks, not proof of walkable access to every school.

A genuinely cool winter

Late December–March can have lows around 10°C; summers are hot and humid. Year-round rentals need consideration of both bedroom heating and cooling, unlike a generic Ho Chi Minh City scenario.

Housing: questions before signing

For this city’s climate, focus on cooling, moisture and rain.

  • Does each bedroom have air conditioning, when was it cleaned, and is it noisy overnight?
  • Is electricity paid to the utility or the landlord? What per-kWh rate is written in the lease?
  • Any musty smell, mould or leaks? Request video of cupboards and ceilings after rain.
  • Do opening windows have screens, where does rainwater drain, and how is laundry dried in the wet season?

Wildlife: what to consider

Household & sanitation

Not “harmless”, but no alarmism

Bedbugs: inspect mattress seams, bed frames and luggage. A Móng Cái hospital report does not measure prevalence across cities.

Disease vectors

Species, season and local conditions matter

Mosquitoes: dengue occurs year-round, with rainy-season peaks. Malaria mainly concerns specific rural areas, not every city.

Source

Venomous & dangerous

Presence does not mean frequent encounters

Venomous snakes: use care around vegetation and debris. Northern typhoon bite reports are local events, not Da Nang encounter frequencies.

Source

City encounter frequency is not quantified: no percentages or frequent/rare rating is available. Inspect the property, screens, drains, waste, standing water and seasonal warnings. Sources of differing dates checked 12 September 2026; categories can overlap.

Practical answers before moving

Hanoi: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Hanoi: 3,538 USD/month: housing 828 USD, groceries 650 USD, utilities 130 USD, education 750 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

What should families with children consider in this country?

Check teaching language, available places and the school run before renting. Da Nang offers fewer international-program choices than Ho Chi Minh City.
