Practical answers before moving

Azerbaijan: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Baku: 3,408 USD/month: housing 897 USD, groceries 650 USD, utilities 130 USD, education 600 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Ganja: 2,544 USD/month: housing 455 USD, groceries 546 USD, utilities 117 USD, education 400 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

Registration is free and required for stays over 15 days; for Kazakhstani citizens, over 30 days.

  • Baku: A capital-city base on the Caspian: a waterfront and a broader choice of medical providers. Waterfront housing does not necessarily mean a managed beach nearby.
  • Ganja: A western university city with Khan’s Garden, a puppet theatre and a historic centre. A different urban rhythm, neither a Baku suburb nor a seaside destination.

What should families with children consider in this country?

A parent or legal representative applies for temporary residence for a child under 18. To establish the family relationship, the migration service lists the child’s birth-certificate copy and the parent’s passport copy. Foreign certificates have translation and certification rules, with treaty exceptions for CIS countries and Türkiye when originals are presented. School enrolment is separate.
