Portugal: are the remote-work visa and residence permit the same?
No. The residence visa is followed by an AIMA residence-permit application. That stage requires a passport, the valid visa for this route, a declaration from the foreign employer or client confirming the relationship, and housing evidence. For rented accommodation, AIMA specifies a landlord declaration confirming the right to use the property.
How do I document remote work for Portugal?
This route concerns work for an employer or clients outside Portugal. For the visa, employees provide a contract or employer confirmation; independent professionals provide a service contract or other evidence of services. Evidence of professional income over the last three months and tax residence is also required. These are route-specific documents, not the complete consular checklist.
What should I collect for family residence in Portugal?
For AIMA’s procedure with a relative already in Portugal, the checklist includes passports, the sponsor’s residence card, lawful-entry evidence, housing, funds and family ties. Prepare authenticated marriage or birth certificates; a child moving with one parent may need the other parent’s consent or a custody ruling. This procedure’s checklist does not establish every family’s eligibility to apply in-country.

Residence for remote activity outside Portugal
Income-based, remote-work and employment routes require different evidence. The consular visa and subsequent residence process are separate stages.
Visa income criteria use 4 minimum wages; the actual visa category matters
Documents for this route
- AIMA stage: passport and valid remote-work residence visa.
- Foreign employer/client declaration confirming the relationship.
- Accommodation declaration with ownership or landlord evidence.
- The consular visa precedes this stage; do not substitute AIMA's list for its checklist. Prepare contracts, income and tax-residence documents beforehand.
What to do before departure
Order police certificates from the required countries. Check whether validity is measured from issue, entry or filing. Prepare birth, marriage and name-change records; check apostille or consular legalization, treaty exemptions and translation requirements. An apostille and a translation are different procedures.
Leave a tailored power of attorney with a trusted person: specify banks, property, document collection and representation. Confirm each institution will accept it, any substitution authority and expiry. Do not hand over banking passwords.

Confirm school places and teaching language before choosing a neighborhood. Check childcare waiting lists.
Check each family member's residence, work and study rights separately. Children may need custody documents, the other parent's consent specifically to residence, school records and vaccination history. Pet preparation depends on departure, transit, airline and destination veterinary rules.
