Work & taxes

Work permission comes before the contract

Income-based, remote-work and employment routes require different evidence. The consular visa and subsequent residence process are separate stages.

Residence for remote activity outside Portugal. After residence visa: 2 years, renewable for 3 years

Check permitted activity

Foreign-company employees, freelancers, local employees and owner-directors are different legal scenarios. Company registration does not automatically authorize personally working for that company.

When tax obligations arise

Tax residence

The general tests are more than 183 days, consecutive or interrupted, in any 12-month period beginning or ending in the tax year, or a home indicating an intention to maintain and occupy it habitually. A presence day includes an overnight stay. Under these tests, residence normally starts on the first day of the stay. A qualifying home can establish residence with fewer days; statutory exceptions apply. This is not only a calendar-year day count.

Residence rule

Rates & limitations

An ordinary resident is taxed on worldwide income; a nonresident on Portuguese-source income. Under IFICI, other domestic income remains under ordinary IRS rules; foreign income is generally exempt, except Category H pensions. Payments by entities in listed preferential-tax jurisdictions have special 35% taxation rules. “All foreign income is tax-free” is incorrect. The payer’s nationality or bank-account location does not determine income source; individual classification and treaty outcomes are not calculated here.

Tax authority source

Rates are marginal: they apply to the relevant slice of taxable income, not all earnings. A foreign client, crypto payment or offshore account does not automatically make income tax-free. Social contributions, VAT, deductions and treaties need separate analysis.

What to bring to a bank

  • Passport and immigration-status evidence; local identification number if required.
  • Address evidence: lease, registration or utility bill as specified by the chosen bank.
  • Tax IDs and tax-residence countries; CRS/FATCA self-certification when requested.
  • Regular income evidence: employment contract and recent payslips, or freelance agreements, invoices and statements.
  • Origin of savings: statement trail, property sale or inheritance records. For crypto, keep purchase, trade and withdrawal history—not just a wallet balance.

Do not budget around discontinued or unavailable tax concessions. Verify individual eligibility. This is a preparation pack, not an account-opening guarantee.

Work, business & investment

Before buying a business, separately verify debt, licenses, staff, lease, accounts and your residence basis. A purchase agreement does not replace immigration approval. When networking, check the legal entity and counterpart's track record before transferring funds.
