Practical answers before moving

Portugal: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Porto: 4,426 USD/month: housing 1,380 USD, groceries 832 USD, utilities 189 USD, education 750 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Lisbon: 5,500 USD/month: housing 2,001 USD, groceries 936 USD, utilities 202 USD, education 950 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Faro: 4,710 USD/month: housing 1,518 USD, groceries 858 USD, utilities 195 USD, education 800 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

An appealing pace, but popular-city rents and administrative timing can constrain the plan.

  • Porto: On the Douro by the Atlantic: milder summers and wetter autumns and winters than Lisbon (IPMA 1991–2020 normals). Ribeira is the riverfront centre; Foz faces the ocean.
  • Lisbon: Portugal’s hilly capital on the Tagus. IPMA normals show warmer summers and less rain than Porto; the urban waterfront is not an ocean beach.
  • Faro: A lagoon-side city in southern Portugal. Beach islands, city centre and airport are separate parts of everyday travel.

What should families with children consider in this country?

Confirm school places and teaching language before choosing a neighborhood. Check childcare waiting lists.
