Practical answers before moving

Thailand: what goes into a family living budget?

Example for two adults and a seven-year-old: a two-bedroom rental, private school and public transport. These are editorial assumptions, not verified prices. Deposits, relocation, vehicle purchase and taxes are excluded.

  • Bangkok: 4,191 USD/month: housing 994 USD, groceries 780 USD, utilities 150 USD, education 950 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Chiang Mai: 3,120 USD/month: housing 593 USD, groceries 598 USD, utilities 124 USD, education 650 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.
  • Phuket: 4,923 USD/month: housing 1,311 USD, groceries 884 USD, utilities 169 USD, education 1,050 USD. The remainder covers transport, insurance, leisure and reserve.

Which cities should I compare before moving?

Family-friendly services are plentiful, but school, healthcare and transport can double a headline budget.

  • Bangkok: A major city on the Chao Phraya River, not a sea-beach destination.
  • Chiang Mai: A city near mountains with no sea coast; green surroundings do not mean living outside the city.
  • Phuket: Island life ranges from beaches and hills to busy tourist districts.

What should families with children consider in this country?

In Bangkok and Phuket, check school buses, admission fees and waiting lists. In Chiang Mai, account for seasonal air pollution.
